Meditative Doodling is a drawing practice that develops focus, concentration, self- compassion and imagination. When your mind is relaxed, it’s the most creative.
In every class we focus to settle the body, calm the mind and let creativity flow through guided meditation and drawing.
Each class begins with a guided meditation and stream of conscience doodle. The second half of class is for further drawing exploration and pattern development.
I will guide you to center your thoughts and focus your mind to begin a drawing. After demonstrating how to draw a few chosen patterns, we will use spontaneous mark making and line-work to create a structure within which to draw repeating patterns.
Using repetition to create structured patterns within spontaneous line-work you will find a way to let go of your expectations of what making art is supposed to be and access a mind state that is calm and open to the unpredictable. Principals of meditation and mindfulness are introduced.
Materials needed include multiple sheets of drawing paper and black marker or felt-tipped pen.
Meditative doodling is an easy to learn and a relaxing way to create interesting images by drawing and composing different structured patterns. This class can help you to relax, focus your intentions and explore your creativity.
You will learn the basics of creative techniques, relaxing meditation and new methods of art making. We create repetitive patterns and deliberate pen strokes, the result is an abstract piece of art and a relaxed state of being.
Meditation has many beneficial qualities! The mental health benefits of mediation include better focus and concentration, improved self-awareness and self-esteem, lower levels of stress and anxiety and the fostering of kindness. Meditation also has benefits for your physical health, as it can improve your tolerance for pain and help to fight substance addiction. Mindfulness meditation can also lower levels of cortisol — the stress hormone — which helps you feel more relaxed.
Doodling helps with your focus and attention, despite popular belief. It actually keeps you focused by creating just enough stimulation to prevent your brain from reverting to a default state. Doodling gives you an emotional outlet if you have trouble communicating or putting emotions into words. Doodling can help your emotions even if you are frustrated, anxious or depressed. It enhances creative thought, the mental state of doodling is between awareness and day-dreaming and our minds are the most creative when we are relaxed. Just because you are doodling absent-mindedly does not mean that you are absent minded.
All classes begin with stream of conscious doodling where we let the pen flow and your mind relax. Demonstration of step by step pattern making is presented and there are many projects that we work on throughout the course.
